Amazon.com Product Description
Is your car's check engine light on? If it is, your car is trying to tell you something and the Actron CP9145 Super AutoScanner Diagnostic Code Scanner speaks its language. Use this scanner to unlock the information stored in your car's computer. Whenever your check engine light is on, the device can pinpoint the problem so you can fix it fast and be on your way.

![]() The user interface is designed for ease of use and quick control of scanning functions. |
![]() Turn off that distracting "check engine" light. |
The CP9145 is built tough for both shop and road test use. It also features a large, easy-to-read liquid crystal display that shows the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their definitions. And although you still have to fix the problem, the scanner will deactivate the "check engine" light on your dash so you'll no longer be distracted while you drive. The scanner is easy to connect to your vehicle, and a user friendly menu provides a variety of information in a snap, including live engine data parameters (PIDs). Built-in help screens help you interpret the data, and you can view freeze frame data, which provides a "snapshot" of the vehicle's operating conditions at the time of the fault. Meanwhile, an internal 9-volt battery stores the latest test results for later review.
Use the Monitor Status and I/M readiness (Inspection/Maintenance) function to determine if your vehicle is ready for an emissions test. I/M Readiness is an excellent function to use prior to having a vehicle inspected for compliance with a state emissions program, so you'll have a good idea if your vehicle will pass the standards.
Another important thing to remember is that all emission testing facilities will fail a vehicle that has the "check engine" light illuminated at the time of the test--even if it is only lit to remind you of a past-due oil change or 60,000-mile tune-up. With this scanner, you can shut off the check engine light and pass the emissions test on your terms.
The menu also alerts you of any pending DTCs and reads the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) status. By reading the MIL status the scanner gives insight into what might cause your "check engine" light to turn on in the near future. In this way, the scanner also provides some preventive measures to help you keep a close eye on your vehicle's systems.
The scanner comes with CD software that contains 5,000 Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and their descriptions.

Handy device -- Saves $$$$
We had a warning light that kept coming on in our vehicle and as a result we failed inspection. We bought this, hooked it up to the vehicle and found out what the code meant. Looked it up online and knew exactly what was wrong with the vehicle. With the help of the Chilton's manual, fixed the vehicle with a part that cost $7. Owning this device prevented us from having to go to the shop, having them put the same equipment on the vehicle and charging us $100 to tell us the same thing we found out. We've used this numerous times for ourselves and family & friends. Saving everyone a ton of money. It's paid for itself tenfold.
Large Unit !!
I just received my CP9145 Actron Scanner today... To say that I was surprised by the size of it is an understatement !! Although the Amazon review lists it as: 13 x 5 x 10 inches ; 4 pounds... of which the dimensions are ridiculous... I was not prepared for the large size of this unit. It actually measures about 9 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 1 1/2 and weighs out at a little over 1 pound with the cord attached.
I had recently had occasion to have a code read at Autozone on one of my vehicles... and they used an orange scanner which was a nice unit easily held in your hand. I guess I should have asked or noted what unit they were using... It looked a lot like one of the Actron units that I have recently looked at and was prepared to buy. The CP9135 caught my eye as a nice unit, but the CP9145 was somewhat better and at a good price... I really thought I was getting something similar or perhaps the same unit that Autozone uses in their business.
Well, I was totally wrong... This thing is huge, and you are barely able to wrap your fingers around the smaller bottom part of the unit.
Ok, enough said... you can see that I am totally unimpressed with the size of this thing.
I have recently been having a check engine light, on my 1995 Mitsubishi Galant come on. I know.. this scanner is supposed to only check 1996 and later. But my Mitsubishi has an OBDII hook up port... so, I was hoping that this would read my fault code. Well, it doesn't, and it gives me an error that the unit may not be hooked up properly etc..
I also have a small handheld unit that just reads the code numbers... and it doesn't read anything on the above vehicle either. I was hoping this unit would read the codes that are causing the problem... but it is no better than the simple two button code reader. Somewhere I am sure I have read that this code scanner will read OBDI codes... Well.. not on a 1995 Mitsubishi it won't..... even with the newer OBDII plug in.
Also, I was aware that some reviews have been critical of the short attachment cord. I have to echo those sentiments. There is no reason to supply such a short cord with this unit. The next size up as an accessory, that you can buy for this unit, is something like 8 or 9 feet long !! That is totally stupid !! Why they don't supply it with a 1 1/2 to 3 ft. cord or list it as an accessory, is beyond me !!
Those of course are my first impressions with the unit. It may perform flawlessly when attached to a vehicle that is of 1996 or newer vintage. It seems to read ok, and I have no problem with it's workability at the present time.
My main problems with the unit, is it's large size and short cord.... Mainly with it's ergonomics. It is totally unhandy to use... and there are no good reasons for it being this way.
With further use of the unit, I may place an addendum to this review.. but I doubt that it will change my mind as to the useability or handiness of it. Thank you !!
Oh, I just wanted to add... The next time I am in Autozone, I am going to find out what unit they use to check codes for their customers... This gargantuan thing I purchased is not what I really want in my tool box. Again.. Thank you !!
Not for vehicles manufactured after 2003
I purchased this based upon the add that it's for vehicles 1996 and newer. It(the add) fails to mention this is probably an older scanner that only has vehicles made to and including 2003. I have a 2005 Jeep and the engine wasn't made until then. There are scanners that can be undated and that's why I had to return it.
